Khao Tohm Mak Kuay is a Lao traditional festival treat, also used as a religious ceremony dish. Here is authentic recipe to make your khao tohm mak kuay at home.

Ingredients

  • 10 pisang-awak-banana, Choose yellow ripe ( Peel and cut each in half)
  • 500 g of cooked sticky rice
  • 300 mL of coconut milk
  • 300 g of sugar, less or more
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 10 banana leaves, cut banana leaves about A5 paper size, ( rinse and clean, then bring them to steam or dry with sun heat to make them soft not to be broken when wrapping

Preparation

1. Pour the coconut milk into a pot, add salt, sugar, and simmer on low heat until the sugar melts. Add the cooked sticky rice to the pot, mix together and turn off the heat to let it cool down at room temperature.

2. To wrap: use a banana leave, place the sticky rice inside, add a slice of banana on top, then fold and close the leave, you can also use bamboo or a cotton string to tie the leave.

3. Steam the wraps for about 30 to 40 minutes. Then take them out from the steamer and let them cool down before serving.
