Vientiane City Pillar Shrine (Hor Lak Muang)

After Vientiane was destroyed in 1828, the original city pillar shrine was lost. A recent archeological discovery found fragments of the original site dating back to the 4th or 5th centuries.

A new City Pillar Shrine, or Hor Lak Muang, was constructed on this ancient site in 2012. The pillar inside is believed to house guardian protectors of the city and is worshiped by locals asking for good fortune and health.
